For all y’all who are not from around here, the “SX” refers to the South-by-Southwest music and film festival (usually abbreviated SXSW, which is a major Austin happening in mid-March. Karen Harton and the other folks at ArtSpoken put together a juried show of Austin artists to coincide with the 2007 festival. This small show had 7 artists and about a dozen painting. Although some ArtSpoken shows are primarily realist art, this one features more abstract work—thus (I suppose) the acceptance of one of my more ethereal paintings, Town Lake Turtles. I had the great good fortune to happen upon this turn of turtles on a snag near the junction of Barton Creek and Town Lake one pleasant January morning. They appeared to be about to embark for another world. Town Lake Turtles III is from the same photograph.

This show was my first effort to show my work in public. It was organized by Phillip Wade and Zita Raymond for some of Phillip’s students, who included (besides Zita and me), Fran MacDonald Berry, Steven Beltz, Carl Jacono, Georgia Zydes, and Robert Wommack. Other participants included Sam Hurt (the artist responsible for our wonderful invitation) Eve Larson, Linda Dorchester, and Austin photographer Coles Hairston. We had a very big turnout for the opening on an exceptionally fine Austin evening and many sales. One could not have asked for a better initiation into the world of art shows.
